How Much Does Website Maintenance Cost for a Small Business?

Your website went live, the invoice is paid, and now someone is asking you to pay every month to “maintain” it. It’s fair to wonder what that money actually buys, and whether you need it. The honest answer depends on your site, your business and how much of the work you want on your own plate.

Website maintenance cost depends mostly on how much hands-on time your site needs each month. At The Web Smithy, it’s billed at a flat $75 per hour, with monthly Care plans from $75 (one hour) to $525 (seven hours). A simple brochure site needs far less than an online store or a site that changes every week.

What website maintenance actually covers

Maintenance is everything that keeps a website safe, working and current after launch. For a typical small business WordPress site, that includes:

  • Software updates for WordPress, the theme and every plugin, tested so an update doesn’t break the site.
  • Security monitoring and backups, so problems are caught early and the site can be restored if something goes wrong.
  • Content changes like new hours, prices, staff, photos, services and promotions.
  • Troubleshooting for broken forms, display problems, slow pages and error messages.
  • SEO upkeep such as page titles, descriptions, Search Console warnings and keeping business details consistent.

If you’d like the longer version, our post on what a webmaster does walks through each area.

What drives the cost up or down

Factor Lower cost Higher cost
Site size A handful of pages Dozens of pages, a blog, many service areas
Features Contact form and basic pages Online store, bookings, memberships, custom integrations
How often it changes A few updates a year Weekly content, new products or campaigns
Plugins A small, well-maintained set Many plugins, or older ones that need extra testing
Condition Recently built and kept current Years behind on updates, or built by someone no longer around

Your options, side by side

Doing it yourself

The cash cost is low, but the time cost is real. You’ll need to log in regularly, run updates, check that nothing broke, confirm backups are working and fix problems when they appear. For a very simple site and a hands-on owner, that can work.

Paying only when something breaks

Some owners wait until there’s a problem. It feels cheaper until the problem is a hacked site, a contact form that hasn’t sent an email in two months, or an emergency fix that takes longer because nothing was kept current.

A monthly care plan

A plan gives you predictable costs and a professional checking on your site every month whether or not you request changes. Most problems get caught before customers ever notice them.

The most expensive website maintenance is the kind that only happens after something breaks.

What maintenance costs at The Web Smithy

Core Care - 1 Hour Essential Protection
Core Care covers the essentials every month.

We keep pricing simple. All webmaster work is billed at $75 per hour for actual work performed. If you’d rather have a predictable monthly arrangement, our website care plans include a set number of hours each month:

  • Core Care: 1 hour per month, $75. Updates, security monitoring, backup confirmation and availability for questions.
  • Growth Care: 3 hours per month, $225. Adds regular content updates, small design changes and routine SEO.
  • Pro Care: 5 hours per month, $375. For growing businesses with frequent changes and new pages.
  • Elite Care: 7 hours per month, $525. For online stores, membership sites and content-heavy websites.

Extra time in a busy month is billed at the same $75 rate and itemized on your invoice. There’s no long-term contract, and you can move between tiers as your needs change. If we host your site on one of our hosting plans, Core Care is included as the required baseline. If you host elsewhere, you can choose any tier, or skip a plan and pay as you go.

How to tell what your site needs

Ask yourself three questions. How often does your business change? How much revenue depends on the website working today? And who will notice if something breaks? If the honest answers are “often,” “a lot” and “probably a customer,” a monthly plan will almost always cost less than the problems it prevents.

  • Maintenance covers updates, security, backups, content changes, troubleshooting and SEO upkeep.
  • Cost depends on site size, features, how often it changes and its current condition.
  • Our webmaster rate is $75 per hour, with Care plans from $75 to $525 a month.
  • Waiting until something breaks is usually the most expensive option.
